Latch hook weaving is one of the simplest and most relaxing crafts there is!

A latch hook mat
Yarn
Scissors
A guide for cutting your yarn pieces (aka a strip of cardboard!)
Choosing your yarn
The best ply for yarn on a standard latch hook is generally 8 ply. Thicker sizes may be too fat to pull through your grid, but you can use them for things like loop weaving on your mat.
Acrylic yarn is affordable and widely available. Its a great choicefor beginners and comes in a variety of colours.
Wool yarn will provide a softer finish and often will fray gently to provide a warmer, more organic look.
You can also experiment with yarn scraps and create a piece that has a variety of texture and colour.

How to make a latch hook knot.

STEP 1 - Start by folding a piece of yarn around the base of the latch hook

Step 2 - Push your latch hook tool underneath the first suare. Keep pushing until the latch sits above the bottom line of the square. Hold the yarn up and to the left.

STEP 3- Place the top of the yarn to the right between the latch and the hook. Hold the top of the yarn while you do this. I say it is like putting a scarf around the neck of the latch hook.

Step 3 - Make sure the 'mouth' (the latch) is closed and let go of the yarn. Now pull downwards and the latch will slip through the square to make a knot.

Step 4 - Your knot is created! Now repeat to make your design. You will get better at making it even and can trim loose bits at the end.

How to loop weave on a latch hook mat

Step 1 - Hook thread through the latch hook mat and tie it in a knot

STEP 2 - Lay your mat on the table and gently pull through a loop with your latch hook. The more you pull, the longer your loop will be so this is how you can determine the length of your loops

You can pull through loops at even or odd lengths. It is important to choose a yarn that is wide enough to stick in the latch hook grid so make sure it is thick enough. Chenille yarn is great for this!

Once you have threaded a few loops through, you will get an idea of texture.

When your are done. Simply tie off your yarn at the back of the mat
